The New Inn, 38 Chapel St S, Colchester, Essex CO2 7AX
The New Inn was one of three long-standing real ale pubs in Colchester that were closed in 2011, leaving the real ale peeps of Colchester worried. Fortunately, they’re all in new ownership and revamped and thriving.
My first visit to the New Inn in 2011 was well and truly in the middle of thier revamping process, with walls or doorways being knocked through. And the range of beers was less impressive than had been tweeted by visitors over the preceding weekend. I had the Harwich Town Ganges, which was fine enough, but if you’re a dark ale man, then only a dark ale with slake the thirst!
By the time of my second visit in 2011, in early November, the redecoration was pretty much complete, and there was a full range of beers on: Thwaites ‘Original’, Green Jack’s ‘Orange Wheat’ and ‘Trawlerboys’, and Wibbler’s ‘Crafty Stoat’ – I of course tried this latter, and the stout was on cracking form. Since then the pub has had two or three couples managing it, and as of late 2015 the owner’s son appears to have got the pub back on track.
