It’s been a busy few weeks, redecorating the front room. Not a quick ‘new coat of emulsion’ job, but stripping everything down. And I mean everything.
So after finally stripping and varnishing the floorboards, I’d spent Saturday painting the ceiling and skirting board, and was looking forward to a break. A quick check of the phone, and there was @VictoriaInnCol touting their Weird Beard Brew tap takeover that evening, with Decadence Stout one of many beers on tap. Having had and enjoyed that beer in a can from The Craft Beer Shop in Billericay a while back, it seemed like A Good Idea to head over to The Victoria Inn, grab a pint or two, and get some fish and chips from the excellent chippie just a few doors down from them.
The pub was buzzing when we got there, as it often is and has been since Sheena and Andy have worked their magic since taking over an empty pub five years ago. There was a Meet the Brewer sessions with brewer Bryan Spooner, who was there, without any risk of the Trades Descriptions Act being invoked with regard to his company failing to deliver on it’s name.
In the end I plumped for their Black Perle a coffee milk stout, which was everything I could wish for. Rich and smooth, nice head, creamy and a hint of coffee – absolutely gorgeous. Another trip to the bar for a refill and I found out that it was only 3.8%abv – totes amazeballs! It drank like a much stronger beer, although I now see they do a 7.6% Double Perle, which I shall have to keep my eyes open for.
And I not only managed to get a pic of my pint being poured, but a Vine of Bryan talking about the brew!
